The Lord Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil (John Davies) organised a community appeal with schools and other groups to raise funds to purchase and equip an ambulance for use in France and Belgium. The funds were forwarded to the Red Cross, and the ambulance was prepared and sent in October 1915.
